Students have been researching three main city-states of the Italian Renaissance (Florence, Genoa, and Venice) in terms of five different factors (economic, political, social, cultural, and military).
Their current task is to evaluate their evidence in order to determine which of those cities is the most influential in 2-3 factors of their choice. They will use the information to pitch the city-state they consider the most influential to a newspaper publisher who is looking to relocate their company to the most influential city state.
In order to do this successfully, students need to consider what aspects of influence would be most valuable to a newspaper publisher. For example, how might the cultural power of a city-state be important for a newspaper publisher? As long as students can support their choices with evidence, there are no wrong answers.
At this point, students should be writing jot notes regarding which city-state is the most influential in the 2-3 categories of their choice and evidence to support it. These notes will form the basis for the body paragraph.
We will complete the body paragraph of our essays before returning to the introductory paragraph.
Below is the outline for our persuasive essay.
We have three questions that we have discussed as a class:
We are working through writing the introductory paragraph for a persuasive essay about these questions.
You can find the notes generated by the class regarding the questions themselves and ways to write a hook -- an engaging first sentence to catch the reader's interest -- below.
